Traditional carols and wassail songs

Strada is interested here in an underestimated repertoire and abounding in wealth, that of the traditional songs which for centuries adorn the celebrations of Christmas and the New Year. For the greater part very former(old) and of oral tradition, they were collected in the bend of XIX-th and XX-th centuries in praiseworthy one attempt to protect traditions widely menaçées. Proposed selection understands(includes) on one hand Christmas and songs of the New Year or Épiphanie, and on the other hand songs of collection such as would have interpreted them the herdsman - quêteurs of another time.

The importance of the Christmas in West explains the impressive variety of this repertoire, which takes root in the heathen celebrations of the wintry solstice. So calends - of the Latin calendae and indicating(appointing) at the Roman the first day of the month - they put back us, in orthodox Christian cultures, in the period of the new year. Koleda Bulgarian, Rumanian Colinda and Greek Kolanda indicates(appoints) to it songs of collection appropriate(clean) for this time of the year.

Since age-old times, the tradition of collection contributed to a certain redistribution of wealth. Under the crook of corporate bodies or charities, the tours of collections were also the prize of groups of children, teenagers or of needy. Often as we were noted there merry excesses, light ripailles and frank yvrogneries, generously(coarsely) finançées straight from the profits of collection! And the haste of young people quêteurs with girls' houses " ready of marrying " gives to think that the social function(office) of the activity, quite as the preoccupation of the young participants, was quite other! One lent nevertheless big credit to good wishes lançés by scroungers, besaciers and the other tramps of passage. And all the evil spells were good to whom would refuse Part-à-Dieu.

A fearless hypothesis wants that words aguilaneuf, guillonné, guignolée and their numerous dialectal variants derive from the shout of rejoicing " In the mistletoe(boom) the new year! " Lançé by the druids picking the mistletoe(boom) in the oaks of the crowned forests, a heathen practice bound(connected) to the annual flourish. Closer of us, aguinan in gaëlique and aguinaldo in Spanish, meaning New Year's gifts, are been similar there and return us to the notion of present, underlining the fact that long ago and for a long time, the allocation of New Year's gifts was more or less associated to a gesture of charity and division(sharing). Word very New Year's gift has a connotation of maid expects(heralds), and more familiarly of first time, calling back impossible to circumvent good wishes of the New Year.

Word Kadou diverts from the Rumanian cadou significant exactly present or New Year's gift. It(he) was held(retained), in mind of this very ancient(former) and respectable tradition of collection and good wishes.
